10 Successful Harvard Application Essays

10 Successful Harvard Application Essays he ending hook should deliver a strong message that will remain with the reader even after he or she has finished their essay. This is the point where you will create the opening sentences in your essay. These will be the words that will draw your reader into the story. Your list will serve as your outline, and the expanded story you create will become the first draft. It won’t be perfect but all of the elements are already in place. Although you need to be creative while writing your essay, resist the urge to get creative with the facts. Don't exaggerate your own accomplishments to make yourself look better. You don't need to lay out a long list of all your shortcomings, but acknowledging weaknesses and misjudgments can demonstrate authenticity and give your legitimate accomplishments greater credibility. Admissions officers don't expect you to be perfect, so don't make your essay unbelievable by trying to pretend that you are. Even if one prompt draws your attention, however, spend some time thinking about at least a few of the other choices. Using lofty language and complex sentence structure can make you sound sophisticated, but is that really how you speak? Don’t let your voice get lost in the pursuit to impress readers. Why is this the program you want to be admitted to? What is special about the faculty, the courses offered, the placement record, the facilities you might be using? If you can’t think of anything particular, read the brochures they offer, go to events, or meet with a faculty member or student in the program. You don’t want to be completely straightforward in these cases and appear superficial, but skirting around them or lying can look even worse. For example, you may want to go to a program in a particular location because it is a place that you know very well and have ties to, or because there is a need in your field there. Sometimes, deeper reflection can help you find an even better subject to write about than your first impulse. Use outlines, word clouds or free association to help you come up with material for each of the different prompts. You want to draw the reader in with the first words you say and keep them there until they finish your paper. Next you will compile a list of your personal life experiences. If you do an online search of any university application requirements, this is pretty much the blanket list they will give you. But these are only surface materials that anyone can give. What they are really looking for is the underlying truths they will find in these documents. Again, doing research on the program may reveal ways to legitimate even your most superficial and selfish reasons for applying. This handout will help you write and revise the personal statement required by many graduate programs, internships, and special academic programs. Most of us has situation that had taught us important things. It was a time you expected so much from your life. This technique shows personality and own desires in text. Experienced authors recommend using humor, jokes, metaphors, and other literature tips. Different kind of emotions make the essay unique. Every academic institution will have there preferences, therefore, verifying which format is the most suitable prior to writing the essay is recommended. Your academic resume, which should include your GPA, completed coursework, and SAT/ACT scores. You should also include some evidence that you are ready for college, a record of your extracurricular activities, work experience, and recommendations. Most universities are looking for two different packages when you submit your college application. Your goal is to make sure that you get all the details of the story in place and that you are following the prompt of the university. Look at the lists you’ve already made and choose one or two topics and boil them down to the bare bones. Remember, you won’t have a lot of time to impress your readers so your story must cut to the chase pretty quickly. Think of it like you are creating a preview to a new movie. Why would the members of the program want to choose you over other applicants? Be honest with yourself and write down your ideas. If you are having trouble, ask a friend or relative to make a list of your strengths or unique qualities that you plan to read on your own . Ask them to give you examples to back up their impressions (For example, if they say you are “caring,” ask them to describe an incident they remember in which they perceived you as caring).

There has been an increased concern with the concept of a â€Å"good† or â€Å"healthy† night sleep in modern society, which has led to a large increase in the amount of epidemiological research, focusing on how a healthy sleep pattern can influence an individual’s cognitive functioning; during their normal day to day lives. There is no question that sleep is a fundamental behaviour and a key aspect of human life, Not only does it â€Å"allow us to recharge our run-down bodies and recover from physical and mental fatigue† Hess, (1965), but also is vital for â€Å"Normal cognitive and brain function† Benke (2009) in adults and children. However, what happens when a healthy sleep pattern is disrupted due to individual differences? There have been many researchers who have touched upon this area of research, mentioning that individual differences can make an individual more susceptible to sleep disruption. As more research has looked into this area it has become more apparent on the affect they have on a healthy sleep pattern, which in turn, has an effect on day to day cognitive functioning. It is a common misconception that a healthy adult sleep pattern requires around 8 hours of sleep a night for normal cognitive function. Contradictory to this, Monk et. Al (2001) found evidence which disproved this claim as in fact Ferrara, De Gennaro stated â€Å"that the basic amount of sleep is only around 6 hours per night† (2001:155). My eyes followed it until it was in front of me. Lets go, Angela. I opened the car door, threw in the bag of clothes, and signaled Angela to get in. I followed, and closed the door. Going back home. Johnny nodded as he locked the car. While the car was in motion, Angela started to move and took out the blue shirt she picked earlier. She showed a proud smile while holding it in front of her. He extended one of his hands in front of me. Money. How much you want? He seems to gave it a little thought before he answered me. A three digit number. I pulled out my checkbook and wrote a random number and threw it at him with my signature. One hundred and twenty six. Satisfied? He picked up the check and nodded and walked away quietly. A couple days later, Tony found me again and demanded money. I told myself that this will be the last time. If he comes back again, Ill have to end the friendship between us and maybe even start using violence to shut him up. I wrote him another check with the same number on it like last time. After he got what he anted, he left again without a word. Later, I met a girl named Flossie Wentworth. She was a beauty and I want her as my wife. When I proposed to her, she rejected me. She said she wanted to remain free and unattached. Then I raised five of my fingers. Become my wife and fifty thousand dollars will be yours. She then agreed and became my wife. But very soon, I got bored of Flossie. I wanted her to become my wife because she was a challenge at first, but when I started to give her money every day, she did everything I asked and it got boring. So later, I requested a divorce. I then met another girl, named Marie Wharton. Shes even more beautiful than time. Then I told her: Become my wife and you get one hundred seventy five thousand. She agreed, Just like Flossie and became my new wife. A week or two after I remarried, Tony came into my life again. He demanded money and I said no. Then he threatened me with a gun so I had to give him another check with a hundred dollars. After he left, I picked up the phone, thinking that I should call my father, but I didnt. I felt that Ill lose my pride by asking others for help. Ill see how this goes. .. The next day, Tony asked me for money again. Tony, how long are you going to keep this up? He grinned. Today will be the last day for me. I promise. I ripped out the check from my checkbook and raised it in front of his face. Last time, thats it. He nodded, took the check and left. Lawrence. Wake up. I heard my name, but when I open my eyes, I was blind folded. A pair of hands removed the fold and I sighted two men. One of them is Tony, but I dont recognize the other one. I found my hands tied behind my back and were in a room with a door and a small window, enough to let a little light in. I was down on the floor. Lawrence. My friend here, Peter is in need of money. Why dont you do him a favor? He took out a checkbook and a pen and threw it at my lap. I glared at him. Sorry, Tony. No can do. He. Then I guess we have no choice. He pulled out a handgun and aimed it at me. Write it. I sighed. How can I write with hands tied? They both looked at each other and Peter started to walk towards me and untie my arms. I started to write the check. After I was finished, Tony crouched down to get the check. I punched him and grabbed his gun and aimed it at Peter. Dont you move. Im tired of all this. Suddenly, I felt a sharp pain on my back. When I turned my head, I saw Tony holding a knife in my back. I started to faint as the pain took over my body. Back to POP or Lawrence Sir. Law I looked through the glass window and saw him in bed. The doctors said that hes in a critical condition and he might not make it. I called Dry. David McCoy. He came over and looked at my son. Independence And Failure In Macbeth Essays - Characters In Macbeth

Independence and Failure in Macbeth Peasants of the early sixteenth century are often pictured carrying a bundle of limbs tied with vines on their backs. This is a perfect metaphor for the events in Macbeth. Macbeth is one of many thanes, or limbs, bundled together. The thanes are united by the king, or the vine. Scotland, or the peasant, carries the bundle by the sweat of his brow. They carry the bundle for fires on cold nights, or wars, and to build homes, or castles, to protect them from the elements, or invaders. If the limbs are tied improperly, one limb may slip to the side and cause the peasant, or nation, to stumble or fall. If the limb slides completely out, the rest of the limbs may follow because the bundle is loose. Marriage is like a triangle. Each spouse makes up one of the leaning sides, and marriage the lower side. The three together are very strong, but to stand they all must be united. The longer a marriage is held the longer the bottom stretches, and the more dependent each person becomes on the othe r. If one side tries to stand on its own then the second will fall on the first as it tries to stand. This metaphor also excellently exemplifies the catastrophe that occurs in Macbeth as both Lady Macbeth and Macbeth try to separate. Macbeth is a eighteenth century play written by William Shakespeare. Using these two metaphors, the breakdown in the relationship between Lady Macbeth and Macbeth and between the king and the thanes and how they perfectly parallel each other because each is caused by Macbeth's will to be independent . According to Webster's dictionary, the archaic definition of independence is ?competence? (1148). To be independent is not to be ?subject to control by others? (Gove 1148). This means that independence is to be in control of ones decisions and to feel they are good decisions. Macbeth, on the other hand, feels independence is to not be subordinate to others like the king. To be independent, one must be strong. Inner strength, not physical strength, is needed. Inner strength is only accomplished by having a high self-esteem. Macbeth does not and must use others to reach for independence. Macbeth needs this strength: It [Macbeth] hurls a universe against a man, and if the universe that strikes is more impressive than the man who is stricken, as great as his size and gaunt as his soul may be he will fall. (Van Doren 217) According to Macbeth's ideas of independence and of strength, he is neither independent nor strong. He feels the need for both and thus allows nothing, including murder, to get into his way. Shakespeare opens Macbeth with the disorder being stabilized by the king and thanes. The thanes fought ?rebellious arm ?gainst arm? to curb ?his lavish spirit? (I, ii, 56- 7). Macbeth's stature increased to fill the space in the bundle of limbs opened by the death of the Thane of Cawdor for ?what he hath lost, noble Macbeth hath won? (I, ii, 67). ?When we first see him [Macbeth] he is already invaded by those fears which are to render him vicious and which are finally to make him abominable? (Van Doren 216).At the end of Act I, Lady Macbeth and Macbeth are discussing whether or not to assassinate the king (I, ii). Macbeth has not committed himself to this sin and to independence, he has not broken the commitatus bond that exists between the king and thane. Likewise, Macbeth's marriage is unstable as they argue, but their triangle is still together as they depend on one another. Lady Macbeth and Macbeth each experiment with external forces to gain independence from their spouse. Macbeth uses the witches, on which he becomes increasingly dependent. Lady Macbeth uses alcohol and Satan to ?unsex? her and make her strong (II, ii, 1; I, v, 42). Both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth deny their dependence on their aid, and still require their spouse. Their self denial of their dependence makes them weak, and the more self denial the weaker they get. As a married couple, they are splitting away from each other: they are trying to turn their triangle

Free Essays on Economic Boom

AMERICA'S economic boom may have nurtured a new breed of harmless and incompetent white-collar criminal but fresh accusations concerning Wall Street Mafiosi have reminded investors of the raw thuggery their money can also attract. The US authorities have charged more than 100 people with crimes ranging from securities fraud to "solicitation of murder" in the biggest crackdown on stock fraudsters in history. What gave the dawn raids extra spice was the alleged involvement of all five families - Bonanno, Colombo, Gambino, Genovese and Luchese - that comprise La Cosa Nostra in New York. The Mob allegedly gained control of DMN Capital, a Manhattan investment bank, which was then run as a "joint venture" to co-ordinate "crews" of crooked brokers at various shady firms across the region. Brokers were bribed with excessive commissions for pushing house stocks. Those that tried to renege on the agreement were beaten. The defendants had a list of aliases that was almost as long as their charge sheet: "Little Robert", "Frankie", "Sebbie", "Ralphie", "Vinny" and "Sal".
